Mount Kinabalu 2 Day Climb
Two days and one night is the standard way up Mount Kinabalu, and it is what most climbers book. You walk to the huts on day one, sleep badly, and stand on the summit before dawn on day two. Here is what that costs, what it asks of you, and when the three-day version is the better buy.
The two-day climb, from $920
Private, from your Kota Kinabalu hotel, one night at Laban Rata and the summit before dawn. The most-reviewed climb of the mountain.
From $920 per personCheck AvailabilityPermit, guide, park entry and hut bed included — non-refundable What a 2 day climb of Mount Kinabalu actually is
Day one: you are collected in the morning, driven roughly two hours to Kinabalu Park, registered with your passport, and transferred to Timpohon Gate. From there you walk about six kilometres and 1,400 m to the huts at 3,272 m. Dinner is served from half past four and the lights go out at eight.
Day two: supper at half past one in the morning, out of the hut at half past two, and about three hours by head torch to Low's Peak at 4,095 m. You watch the light arrive, then descend the whole 8.5 km back to the gate and drive to the coast.
Why choose a 2 day climb
It is the cheapest way onto the mountain
Fares start at $920 per person against $1,200 for the three-day format, and the summit is identical.
It costs you one day, not two
You leave Kota Kinabalu in the morning and you are back the following evening. On a two-week trip through Sabah that is a real difference.
Every format is available in it
Private or shared, with or without the via ferrata — every option on this mountain except the extra acclimatisation night comes in a two-day shape.
It is the most-tested option
The private two-day departure carries several hundred reviews, far more than anything else here.

What you get, and what you don’t
Every two-day fare here covers park entry, the climbing permit, the mountain guide, climbing insurance, one night at Panalaban, five meals, return road transport and the summit certificate. On the via ferrata departure it also covers the Walk The Torq session and all the gear.
You do not get a second night, a later start on day one, or any refund. Porter fees, guide overtime after 4pm, transport overtime after 7pm and the outskirt hotel surcharge are all settled on the mountain in ringgit.
The shared two-day climb, from $1,000
A group capped at ten, meeting at Kinabalu Park, and bookable at a single traveller with a transport supplement.
From $1,000 per personCheck AvailabilityPermit, guide, park entry and hut bed included — non-refundable Planning a 2 day climb
Book months ahead. Sabah Parks issues around 130 climbing permits a day, capped by the number of beds at the huts, and February to April is both the driest stretch and the hardest to get. Confirmation takes up to 48 hours.
Train for the descent as much as the ascent, because you will come down 8.5 km of steps having been awake since half past one. Pack a head torch, gloves, a hat and a complete change of dry clothes, and send the dry set up with a porter. What the climb asks of you covers the rest.
If you are flying into Kota Kinabalu within a day or two of the climb, think hard about the two-day format. Jet lag plus a six in the morning pickup plus 2,200 m of ascent is a lot to ask of one day.
Who should choose something else
Book the three-day instead if you are nervous about altitude, if you are arriving in Sabah the day before, or if you would simply rather start walking rested than start walking at ten past nine having been up since five. That night is what the extra $280 buys, and for a first-timer it is the best-value $280 on this mountain.
Also look elsewhere if you are climbing alone and want the lowest total: the private two-day departures require two travellers, so a solo climber pays twice. The three-day climb takes one. And if the summit is not really the point, the park itself is open to anyone without a permit at all.
Frequently asked questions
What does 2D1N mean?
Two days and one night. You walk up to the huts on day one, sleep at 3,272 m, and summit before dawn on day two before descending. It is the standard format on this mountain.
Is one night enough to acclimatise?
For most climbers, yes. You sleep at 3,272 m and summit at 4,095 m, which is high enough for headaches but well below the altitude where acclimatisation becomes a serious issue.
How early does a two-day climb start?
Six or half past six in the morning on day one, from Kota Kinabalu, followed by a two-hour drive. The departures that meet at Kinabalu Park start later, at half past six from the park itself.
Can I do a two-day climb solo?
On one of them. The shared departure takes a minimum of one traveller with an MYR 500 transport supplement; the two private climbs require two.
Is the two-day harder than the three-day?
The walking is identical. What is harder is the start: on a two-day climb you have been awake for four hours and driven two before you take your first step uphill.
Which two-day climb has the most reviews?
The private departure from Kota Kinabalu, by a very wide margin — 578 reviews against 105 and 5 on the others. That is worth something when you are choosing between operators you have never met.
Can I add the via ferrata to any two-day climb?
Only to the one that includes it. Walk The Torq comes as part of a specific private departure, and it decides which hut you sleep in, so it is not an add-on you arrange on the mountain.
